Ferne is a super speedy road runner who occasionally steps out on the trails to show that she can dominate those too. Her first-ever trail run was the Karkloof 50-miler which she won that year!

If there’s anyone whose tips you can take to heart, it’s hers! Here are her top trail running tips to help you make the most of your race:

  • Train on Similar Trails – Familiarise yourself with the environment, terrain, and conditions to gain a mental and physical edge.
  • Strength Training is Key – Build strength to enhance performance and speed up recovery. Exercises such as lunges and squats can be beneficial.
  • Gear Up Wisely – Invest in proper trail running gear, including shoes, socks, and moisture-wicking clothing that fits comfortably. Train with the gear you’ll use on race day to avoid surprises. For the 5km trail run, any comfortable running shoes will be sufficient, but for longer runs, investing in a good pair of running shoes is highly recommended to avoid injury.
